How to Avoid Sealcoating Scams
Unfortunately, the sealcoating business has more than its share of con artists looking for their next victim. It is a business that is relatively easy to get into and most customers don’t know enough about the sealcoating process to be able to determine if the material being applied is of good quality or the method of application is correct. They become easy targets for the less than reputable contractor. There are several steps you can take to protect yourself, without spending hours educating yourself on the business of sealcoating. Most of these suggestions just make good sense whenever you hire someone to perform a service for you. First and foremost check out the reputation of the contractor. Second, obtain references and a copy of the company’s insurance certificate. Any contractor worth his salt will have liability insurance to protect the homeowner or business owner from unexpected damages that may occur during the work process. Call all of the references and don’t be afraid to ask questions. Check with the Better Business Bureau. If you are certain the business is reputable and has been in business for a substantial amount of time, you can be fairly certain they will not take advantage you. “A deal that sounds to good to be true, usually is.” This long standing adage has been around for a reason. When it comes to working with a contractor, you get what you pay for. No one is in business to not make money and most contractors have their margins worked out very carefully. They know what they need to charge to make a living and while you don’t want to be gouged, you also don’t want to pay too little. Less than reputable contractors who have given a customer too big of a break in the price, whether by error or intention, have been known to walk off the job midstream and disappear leaving the customer holding the bag. Getting several prices and comparing them, apples to apples, is your best bet in determining what the job should actually cost. Take your time. If a sealcoating contractor shows up at your door uninvited offering you the deal of the century, just be carefull their is a reason it is a deal. Most times you need to just take the information, say “thank you” and close the door. Take your time to investigate the company and the offer and obtain additional estimates. Your driveway will still be there tomorrow and patience can save you many headaches in the long run. And again, take the time to get several estimates and references, and spend some time talking with individual contractors before making your decision.
